Mehran (Ron) Taban, M.D. is a distinguished ophthalmologist specializing in medical and surgical management of the retina and macula in the greater Los Angeles area. A Board Certified Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, he is a Summa Cum Laude graduate of UCLA; then graduated at the top of his medical school class at the University of California Irvine, achieving status in Alpha Omega Honor Medical Society. Dr. Taban has undergone rigorous ophthalmology training, including residency at the world-renowned Cleveland Clinic, being appointed as the Chief Resident, followed by vitreoretinal fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic in surgical and medical retina.
He has been awarded the highest awards in the field of vitreoretinal disease, including Heed Fellowship award, Retina Society Fellowship award, and the prestigious and exclusive Ronald G. Michels Fellowship Foundation award. He has also been voted to the Super Doctors – Rising Stars (2013, 2014, and 2015), and Southern California Super Doctors (2022-2025). His expertise and interests include complex retinal detachments, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, ocular trauma, retinal vein occlusion, intraocular hemorrhage, and uveitis.
As of 2023, Dr. Taban has preformed over 200,000 intravitreal injections, 5,000 surgeries/vitrectomies, and 50,000 retinal lasers.
Dr. Taban has a strong interest in retinal research and has published over 50 original articles and book chapters in top-tiered journals. He is a notable journal reviewer for Ophthalmology and British Journal of Ophthalmology and a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) and American Society of Retina Specialists (ASRS).
Outside of work, Dr. Taban enjoys catching up with family and friends, as well as studying history, hiking and jogging.
